overview

Two fellowships are available for our post-baccalaureate certificate (for information on the program, click here). These fellowships, offered by the Department of Classics and the Classical Studies Graduate Program as part of the university’s commitment in support of equity and inclusion, include full coverage of tuition and fees, a $25,000 combined living stipend and housing subsidy, and support for the student to participate in excavations held over the summer at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli.

Details on eligibility for the fellowship:

  • The fellowships are available to any students from backgrounds underrepresented in our field, including but not limited to those who: (i) have, either as a result of their socio-economic background, status as a member of an historically under resourced group, or challenging life experiences, overcome substantial obstacles on their journey to graduate school; (ii) are the first in their family to attend university; and/or (iii) have lived or worked in a diverse environment or, through their undergraduate education or work experience, demonstrated a commitment to serving historically underprivileged populations. All applicants for one of the fellowships will be considered on an individual basis.

  • Although normally students are required to have at least one full year of Greek or Latin prior to enrolling in the post-baccalaureate program, there is limited funding available for enrollment in Columbia’s intensive Latin course in the summer prior to the fellowship. If, therefore, you have a solid background in Classics or the study of the ancient Mediterranean and are otherwise an appropriate candidate, but have not had the opportunity to study an ancient language, please consider applying for the fellowship.

  • Enrollment in the program must be full-time.

Application Requirements:

  • Applicants are expected to have clear evidence of academic grounding in the field of study they intend to pursue following the post-baccalaureate certificate and to have completed the equivalent of at least one year of college-level Greek or Latin (although see above for an exception).

Required Materials (see also here):

  • Transcripts from all colleges and university-run programs attended

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation

  • Current C.V. or résumé

  • A statement of academic purpose that addresses why you are interested in pursuing the program, your relevant academic or professional experience, and how the program fits into your overall academic and/or professional goals.

  • In addition to the statement of academic purpose (which is a required part of the regular post-baccalaureate application), please submit a statement of up to 750 words discussing how your completion of the post-baccalaureate program will assist you in contributing to the diversity of higher education, in Classics or your related field. In the course of this, we invite you to address how you fit the criteria outlined above for the fellowship (e.g., any particular challenges you may have faced on your journey to graduate school [including at present]; any past contributions you may have made to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion inside or outside of academia; or any other information that you feel is relevant to your suitability for the fellowship).

  • The application fee will be waived if you are applying for the fellowship.

To be considered for the fellowship for AY 2024–25, please submit your materials (including letters of recommendation) via the SPS website by March 1, 2024. (Note that this is in advance of the regular application deadline for the post-baccalaureate.) If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact Darcy Krasne, the faculty advisor of the Classics post-baccalaureate certificate.
