Helenephoria: A Tragicomic Cabaret
Friday, March 31, 2023 (8 pm); Saturday, April 1 (8 pm); Sunday, April 2 (2 pm)
Minor Latham Playhouse, Barnard College
The Barnard Columbia Ancient Drama Group presents a gender- and genre-bending hybrid of Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae and Euripides' Helen. Interlocking plots follow the playwright Euripides and his hapless kinsman as they stage his tragedies (and his travesties), while multiple Helens of Troy each vie to prove themselves queen of drama queens. Taking inspiration from the queer parodic twists of drag performance, Helenephoria casts an irreverent spotlight on icons of tragedy and heroines of myth alike. Performed in Ancient Greek with English titles.
Directed by Izzy Levy and Charles Pletcher.
